Frequently asked questions

Who can receive digital letters?

Private customers who wish to receive digital letters can register free of charge in the Swiss Post app under ‘My digital mail – ePost’. Business customers can send and receive digital letters directly via their business software.

Where and how can I write digital letters as a private customer?

You write your letter on your computer or smartphone, upload it to ‘My digital mail – ePost’ in the Swiss Post app and enter the recipient’s postal address. Depending on the recipient’s settings, the following happens:

  • Digital delivery: the letter is delivered immediately in digital format.

  • Physical delivery: if the recipient opts for the paper version, the letter will be delivered the next day (A Mail) or in two to three days (B Mail). If a letter is submitted digitally by 10 am and the A Mail service is selected, next-day delivery is guaranteed.

What happens to the data?

The Digital letter is processed and stored in Switzerland on a secure, certified infrastructure. The platform meets the requirements of the Swiss Postal Services Ordinance. These requirements are overseen by Postcom. Digital letters are transmitted in encrypted format. After delivery, the content can only be read by the respective recipient. Swiss Post cannot view the contents and does not pass any data on to third parties.

How secure is digital delivery?

Digital delivery is fully secured by multiple security and verification measures: Qualified timestamp in accordance with the ESigA

Each digital letter receives a qualified timestamp in accordance with the Swiss Federal Act on Electronic Signatures (ESigA). This provides a clear record of when a letter was submitted and processed.

Electronic signature according to ESigA

In addition, digital letters are provided with an electronic signature in accordance with the ESigA. This ensures that delivery conforms to an officially recognised standard and can be reliably traced.

Delivery confirmation

A delivery confirmation is available for each digital letter. This can be viewed under ‘Monitoring’ and downloaded if necessary.

How much does the Digital letter service cost?

There is no charge for receiving digital letters. To mail a fully digital version, it costs CHF 0.40: delivery is immediate. If the letter is delivered physically, printing and paper costs are charged in addition to postage. In this case, it costs CHF 1.45 to send a letter via B Mail and CHF 1.65 to send it via A Mail (size C5 envelope).

Why have I automatically been given a ‘My digital mail – ePost’ account?

All users of the Swiss Post app automatically receive access to ‘My digital mail – ePost’ so that they can receive digital postal receipts. Customers decide for themselves whether they also want to receive letters digitally in the future and from which senders.

How can I deactivate digital mail reception?

In the Swiss Post app, go to ‘My digital mail – ePost’ and then select the ‘Profile’ icon, followed by ‘Manager senders’. There, you can deactivate the digital inbox if you want to receive all of your mail physically again. You also have the option to deactivate specific senders so that you continue receiving physical contracts or invoices, for example.
